Tinned Sardines

The Classic Oily Fish
of the Galician Coast

Tinned sardines are one of the most characteristic oily fish of the Galician Atlantic coast. Sardines and the smaller fish known in Galicia as sardinillas have firm, flavoursome flesh and are naturally rich in omega-3, protein and essential nutrients.

At Conservas Rias Baixas 1907, we prepare sardines and small sardines at our cannery in Moana, Pontevedra, using traditional techniques that respect the original flavour and nutritional qualities of the fish. Sardines are pelagic fish found in salt waters along the coast, feeding on plankton, small fish, crustaceans and the eggs of other species.

Our Tinned Sardines and Small Sardines

We offer a wide range of formats and sauces, adapted both to individual consumers and to professional channels including hospitality, export, specialist shops and wholesale distribution. Our sardines are available in olive oil, sunflower oil, spicy oil, escabeche and tomato-based sauces.

Small Sardines

Our sardinillas are small sardines, cleaned and carefully arranged by hand. They have a delicate texture and an intense flavour and are packed in different sauces that complement their natural character.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tinned Sardines

Sardines are naturally rich in omega-3 fatty acids and protein and provide important nutrients including vitamin D, vitamin B12 and several minerals – part of why they are so widely appreciated as part of a varied diet.

The main difference is size. Sardinillas are smaller sardines with a more delicate texture, while our sardine references contain larger fish with firmer flesh and a more pronounced flavour.

Sardines naturally contain omega-3 fatty acids, protein, vitamins and minerals. When packed in olive oil, they also acquire the rich flavour and texture traditionally associated with this type of preserve.

They can be eaten directly from the tin or incorporated into simple meals. In the UK, one of the most familiar ways of serving them is on toast, on their own or with tomato, lemon, avocado or fresh herbs – they also work well in salads, pasta and rice dishes.

Traditionally, high-quality fish preserved in oil can develop in flavour and texture while the tin remains properly sealed and stored. Always follow the storage and best-before information on the individual product.

Atlantic Sardines: Identity
and Tradition in Galicia

Atlantic sardines, Sardina pilchardus, are one of the most representative fish of the Galician coast. They live in shoals near the shoreline and are traditionally caught during periods when their natural fat content gives them particularly good flavour and nutritional qualities.

In Galicia, sardines are also part of the cultural and culinary landscape. They are grilled during popular celebrations, used in empanadas and traditional stews, and preserved in oil or escabeche so they can be enjoyed throughout the year.

Nutritional Properties of Sardines

Sardines in Galician Food Tradition

Sardines and small sardines are among the most abundant oily fish in the world and have formed an essential part of marine biodiversity and the human diet for centuries. They are pelagic fish that live in temperate salt waters.

Because of their abundance and ecological role, they are also an important food source for many marine predators. Along the Atlantic coast, sardine fishing is strictly regulated by the European Union, helping to ensure sustainable practices that protect the species for future generations.

How to Eat Tinned Sardines

Tinned sardines are ready to eat straight from the tin, but they also work particularly well in quick, everyday meals. For the British market, sardines on toast are one of the most natural serving suggestions – served with tomato, lemon juice, black pepper, herbs or avocado.
