Tinned Mussels
from Galicia

What are mussels?
The king of tinned shellfish

Mussels are among the world’s most popular and flavoursome shellfish. They live in intertidal areas along coastlines around the world, feeding by filtering phytoplankton and suspended organic matter from the water. In Galicia, our connection with mussels goes back centuries, and modern mussel farming took a decisive step in 1945, when the first batea was anchored in the Ria de Arousa. Today, more than 3,300 of these floating cultivation platforms form part of the landscape of the Galician rias.

Mussels are prized not only for their flavour, but also for their nutritional qualities. At Conservas Rias Baixas we tin several types of mussel and offer them in a particularly broad range of sizes and formats. One of the features that defines our range is our escabeche, prepared traditionally according to a recipe inherited from previous generations.

Our Tinned Mussels

At Conservas Rias Baixas we prepare our mussels with the same traditional care that characterises our preserves. Our range includes three main origins: mussels from the Galician rias, New Zealand and Chile, available in different sizes and tin formats to suit retailers, hospitality businesses and professional distributors.

Galician Mussels (Mytilus Galloprovincialis)

Cultivated on traditional Galician bateas, these mussels have firm flesh and an intense maritime flavour. We prepare them in traditional escabeche or scallop-style sauce – one of the classics of Galician tinned seafood, ideal on toast, in tapas or straight from the tin.

New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussels (Perna Canaliculus)

Known as green-lipped mussels because of the distinctive colouring of their shells, New Zealand mussels are characterised by their large size and meaty texture. We prepare them fried in escabeche, in a particularly broad selection of formats and sizes.

Chilean Mussels (Mytilus Edulis)

Chilean mussels have a balanced flavour and juicy texture, a quality alternative to local production. We prepare them fried in escabeche: a practical, ready-to-eat option in both smaller and larger professional formats.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tinned Mussels

Yes. Tinned mussels are already cooked as part of the preservation process and can be eaten straight from the tin. There is no need to cook them again – they can be served at room temperature, gently warmed as part of a dish, or added at the end of cooking so their texture remains tender.

Escabeche is a traditional preparation used for fish and shellfish, typically combining vinegar, oil and seasoning. For us, it is part of Galicia’s long canning tradition, prepared according to a recipe handed down through generations and one of the defining preparations in our mussel range.

Mussels naturally provide high-quality protein and nutrients including vitamin B12, iron, selenium, zinc, iodine, phosphorus and potassium. Exact values depend on the particular product and covering sauce, so check the nutritional declaration on the individual tin for precise figures.

Mussels have a distinctive marine flavour and a meaty but tender texture. When prepared in escabeche, the natural flavour of the mussel is combined with acidity and seasoning, creating the characteristic balance associated with this traditional Galician preserve.

Tinned mussels work particularly well with toast or crusty bread, potatoes, salads and pasta. For a simple British-style serving, place them on toasted sourdough and spoon a little escabeche over the top.
