From Fish Salting to Tinned Fish:
the Story of a Galician Cannery
Conservas Rias Baixas – From Cangas to Moana
Four generations of a Galician cannery, united by the sea, the craft and a respect for a way of making preserves that was born in Galicia and is still alive today.
The Origins of a Galician Canning Family
In 1907, the Iglesias family started its first fish-salting business in Cangas do Morrazo, an activity deeply connected to the maritime life and economy of the area.
What began as a small family business would eventually become the foundation of a company closely linked to the development of the canning industry across the Morrazo peninsula.
From Fish Salting to the
Galician Canning Industry
At the beginning of the 20th century, Galicia underwent an important transformation: small fish-salting businesses gradually evolved into canning factories.
At that time, as many as 150 canning companies were operating in Galicia, 20 of them in Cangas, making the area one of the main industrial centres of the sector.
It was in this environment that Conservas Iglesias grew, learning from the sea, from the craft and from a tradition passed down through generations.
