Sustainability isn’t just a word we use in our communications: it translates into concrete decisions inside our factory in Moaña. One of the most recent is the ozone cleaning system we have introduced into our industrial hygiene processes. In this article we explain what this system involves, why we adopted it, and what it means for the environment, for our workers and for the final quality of our preserves.
What ozone cleaning is and how it works
The ozone-based water generation system we have installed at our factory, together with Augaplus España, replaces a large part of the traditional chemicals used in the daily cleaning and disinfection of our facilities. Ozone dissolved in water acts as a powerful, naturally occurring disinfectant, capable of effectively eliminating microorganisms without needing the same amount of chemical products required by conventional industrial cleaning methods.
This ozone cleaning is applied to the hygiene processes for surfaces, equipment and work areas throughout the factory, integrating into the daily production routine without altering the food safety standards required for making preserves. On the contrary, it reinforces those standards by guaranteeing safe, effective disinfection in every corner of the plant.
The results of our commitment to sustainability
Since introducing this system, we have managed to cut the use of chemicals in our daily cleaning and disinfection processes by more than 80%. It’s a significant reduction with a direct impact on several fronts at once, and it sums up well what we mean by a commitment to sustainability applied to the day-to-day reality of a preserve-making factory.
- Lower use of chemical products in daily cleaning and disinfection.
- Reduced consumption of single-use plastics associated with these processes.
- Less exposure of our workers to toxic components.
- Optimised, safe cleaning and disinfection of the facilities.
This reduction in chemicals doesn’t just benefit the environment — it also improves the working conditions of the people who are part of our team every day. Minimising contact with toxic substances is a priority just as important as the effectiveness of the ozone cleaning itself.
Why we chose ozone over other methods
There are different alternatives for reducing chemical use in industrial cleaning, but not all of them offer the same balance between disinfecting power, safety for people and respect for the environment. Ozone dissolved in water stands out precisely because it combines very high disinfecting capacity with a much lower environmental impact than traditional chemical disinfectants, and it naturally breaks down once it has done its job, leaving no persistent residue on surfaces or in the water used.
We decided to adopt this system, together with Augaplus España, precisely because it allowed us to take a firm step in our commitment to sustainability without ever compromising the strict hygiene standards required for making preserves. Not every sustainability innovation is compatible with food safety; this one is, which is why we decided to roll it out across the entire factory.
One more piece of a wider commitment
Ozone cleaning adds to other initiatives that are part of our commitment to sustainability, such as the use of solar power at our factory or our participation in circular economy projects within the sea-based industry sector. You can learn about all these actions on our sustainability commitment page, where we detail each of our most recent milestones.
These decisions are also connected to how we handle raw material and to our facilities in Moaña, designed from the outset to operate more efficiently. You can see how our production centre is organised in our Conservas Rías Baixas facilities section.
Why this benefits you too
A cleaner cleaning process, in the most literal sense of the word, means safer facilities, lower environmental impact, and, ultimately, a preserve made with greater responsibility from start to finish. It isn’t an isolated detail: it’s part of how we understand preserve-making in the 21st century, without giving up the tradition that has defined us for more than a hundred years.
If you want to see the result of this commitment in the form of a product, we invite you to discover our selection of preserves in our online shop. Every can we make carries decisions like this one behind it, designed to look after the environment and the people involved.
If you’d like to know more about any of our sustainability initiatives, including ozone cleaning, you can write to us through our contact page. We like to be transparent about how we work and why we make the decisions that form part of our environmental commitment.
